About the course

This course is delivered at University Centre Myerscough and awarded by the University of Central Lancashire.

The agricultural machinery engineering industry within the United Kingdom employs highly capable, motivated staff who can contribute to the success of their organisation in all areas. This degree will provide the ideal platform for those who wish to progress within the industry.

This course is designed as a progression route for those students who have completed a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma in a relevant subject area. It focuses on developing further an understanding of the agricultural machinery engineering industry and how businesses/organisations function within the industry. The knowledge provided by this course provides a basis for working in management or operational roles either in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the world.


Course modules

Year 1

Actuation Systems Management

This module provides an insight into the use of robotic accessories in the agricultural machinery environment. It will provide the opportunity for students to investigate actuation systems used in a precision agriculture context. The development of autonomous agricultural machinery will be implicit.

Agricultural Machinery Contemporary Industry Developments

Students will have the opportunity to explore and analyse the changing face of the agricultural industry. This module will enable students to critically evaluate a range of current issues and how they affect modern farming methods.

Investigative Project (Double module)

The module aims to provide the student with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, experience and skills needed for project management, allowing the student to face and address real challenges. It is envisaged that the individual student will choose between a technical project, or an organisational management project.

Power Train Engineering

This module aims for students to investigate alternative power train fuels and alternative technology within the Agricultural Machinery Sector. An element of sustainability and the general effects of power trains on the environment will be investigated.

Professional Practice and Quality Standards

This module develops the skills and practices for working in the agricultural industry. The student will gain an understanding of professionalism and the quality standards expected by the industry for best practice. This module aims to provide a quantitative value in the role of Quality Assurance and TQM (Total Quality Management) as a tool to improve product quality and management responsibilities within an organisation or business.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Foundation Degree or HND in a related subject or 2 years (one at Level 4 and the other at Level 5) of Honours Degree work in a related discipline achieved at 'pass' standard or above. Applicants with alternative equivalent qualifications will also be considered positively. Applicants must also produce evidence of successfully completing a research based module at level 5.

Applicants for whom English is a second language must be able to demonstrate proof of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at level 6.0 (with no component score lower than 5.5) or equivalent.

Learning and assessment

Learning Environment:

Learning activities on the course are diverse including lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Students are expected to undertake extensive independent study and research to support taught sessions. Group work and presentations are an important part of the course. In addition students will have access to specialist hardware and software and Myerscough’s virtual learning environment.


Students will face a variety of assessments including formative and summative assessment, essays, technical reports, individual presentations, individual study projects and case studies based on work experience.

Additional Information:

Modules may include guest speakers of standing within the industry. Off site visits of significance may also be undertaken.

What work experience can I get?

There is no formal industry placement on this course. Students often work or volunteer with the industry whilst studying at University Centre Myerscough. This is encouraged and forms a valuable part of their experience.


On successful completion of the course, students may apply for Post Graduate studies or employment.


Graduates will be in a position to apply for management posts in the manufacturing and retail sector, or contract management within the market sector, or in International Business Management, International Trading, and advancement into teaching or research.

Special requirements

Steel toe capped footwear and flame proof overalls may be required for independent research purposes.

Agricultural Engineering

Agricultural engineering involves the development, operation, maintenance and testing of highly specialised agricultural machinery. Students learn practical skills such as how agricultural machines work, maintenance techniques, welding and fabrication and machinery repair. 

The courses incorporate a mix of practicals, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises, including assessment in practicals and written assignments. Employers are keen to employ Myerscough students as they have both the practical workshop skills and the managerial expertise that they require.
